Things Have Become Better, But Things Have Become Worse

In many ways, the grass has become greener in terms of where we come from historically. But similarly, in many other ways we find ourselves falling deeper into a pit of doom and pestilence.

No sane person out there really appreciates a culture riddled with oxymorons and paradoxes in every day experience. By this I mean it is an abnormal reality which dwells in contradiction, and is neither good nor bad, neither improving nor degrading.

It’s over a sweet descending slope and in a breeze of ignorance that we swiftly declare things as having worsened, for reasons too numerous to point out. Many a commentator would say we have truly lost track, and our country has gone to the dogs, as we often whine, citing issues like crime, gluttony, inequality, and further on.

But that would in effect be ignorance of the valued view that many of the oppressions of the past had been loosened, on the other hand. Like shackles of iron which were once heavily clung to our necks and ankles, we the 21st century generation are now relieved and light in burden, whether physical or metaphysical.

By the data that we observe in our presence then it suggests probably that reality is confused. A man should either be good or evil. It is theologically unlawful to not to fall on either side of judgment. How could the highly meticulous angels then judge us and appoint to us our eternal abodes if we’re standing on the fence unwaveringly.

Technology has certainly in many instances continued to reinvent or replicate itself for the better. Psychotic science has in effect been injected with a strong dose of moral antidote, courtesy of the Hippie and Soul eras of the sixties and seventies. Robocop is now sporting a green armband, with even renewable energy weapons, and is on a very promising quest for zero toxicity.

But at the same time, creepy and dark spirited inventions have slithered through the stages of conception and inception with terrifying ease, like with hot grease through grinding machinery. The most of horrible nightmare scenarios have unfolded over human amity at considerable quantity and pace. What has been the fear of many comic writers has turned real in the form of twisted maniacs unleashing killer drones, nuclear bombs, anthrax, and toxic additives.

On the other side of the silent and metallic moon, women have been afforded many of the rights which had for centuries been withheld aggressively so by insecure and bipolar patriarchs. More and more women have broken over the mythical glass ceiling syndrome, to be valued over their worth as opposed to their sexuality.

But then again, more and more women have loudly blown the whistle over abuse, violence and discrimination. Things have somehow improved, and things have somehow changed for the worst. Many defenseless women have also lost their lives to deranged men on violent rampages. They continue experiencing abuse resulting in either mental or bodily harm, and change on this horrific path is happening at a snail’s pace it seems.

We have come a long way since the days of Moses, when lovers would by law require fatality resulting stoning for the abominable act of pleasurable but treacherous adultery. Conditions have also notably improved for women to balance their feminine nature within the fast paced macho world of today. Except for other regions of the world where women are still  by law not considered as equal, discriminative regulations against women have been constitutionally uprooted.

But many South African publications have not stopped bombarding us with awful headlines of infuriated boyfriends or husbands murdering their lovers frequently over cases of adultery. The contradictory thing of it all is most men themselves are adulterous, but being the physically superior specie, they have no perceivable match to institute justice as they also practice on others.

Things have become better, but things have yet become worse. Gone are the days when it was legal to possess a human being as a slave, and determine what, how much, when, and where they eat. Lost in sands of time like old monuments are the days when kings would without objection sacrifice masses of people to appease their abstract ancestors for blessings like rain, fertility and perpetual power and glory.

But on the contrary, the world has never been like now suspended on a very thin string of violent destruction through a catastrophic global war. We certainly call the ancients Barbaric and uncivilized, but which region on our planet right now is not under the threat of one form or another of violence and terror?

At least the ancients battled over one small region at a time on a general basis. But today the world seems colossally divided over two agitated factions, standing neck to neck, and hissing threats of nuclear attack and annihilation at one another.
