Those in public office who commit corruption are traitors

2014-05-15 03:13

Ehud Olmert, former Israeli Prime Minister, has been convicted to six years jail for crimes of corruption perpetrated between 1993-2003 when he was the mayor of Jerusalem. Why is this relevant?

Those who commit or perpetrate fraud and corruption are traitors and treasonous for which they must be held accountable. We have a Public Protector's report alluding to a smoking gun that leaves little room for debate. If this is countenanced then our constitution is doomed.

Cancer is corrosive, it eats into the very ethos and fabric of our society and I applaud the courage of Israeli society to doggedly pursue a matter such as this especially one that occurred so far back. Readers might recall Francois Mitterrand, former French President meeting a similar end. We cannot remain silent or complacent about this in South Africa and just as the arms scandal resulted in the Seriti Commission of enquiry, we have seen this happening in our own country and as a taxpaying society we have a strong and independent judiciary which has the capacity to ensure a full and comprehensive investigation and justice to root it out from those in public office who rape and pillage our fiscus so brazenly as if they are indemnified if not untouchable. In India,I understand three former parliamentarians have been convicted and barred from public officials.

So why not in South Africa? It was done before. Remember Tony Yengeni?
