To vote or not to vote is a no brainer

2016-03-09 17:46

I would urge all irrational minded South Africans - especially to those whom a rabidly racist organization appeals to - not to register and not to vote during the forthcoming local government elections.

But for the rest of us to vote or not to vote is a no brainer. Voting is imperative.

During the drafting of the US Constitution a lady met Benjamin Franklin in the street and demanded to know what sort of government was being fashioned for the American people who had freed themselves from the tyranny of colonialism. He replied 'A republican madam, if you can keep it".

If we are to keep our democracy and the gains reaped since 1994 we have to do much more than scream at television screens and utter racists taunts. We must be bold enough to take ownership of our democracy.

Since 1994 we South Africans have been too complacent, too apathetic and too easily held hostage to fear or hate mongers.

Every nascent democracy has had its bogey and this time around its this KZN Indophobic organization and, yes, complacency on our part that we cannot stop the rot.

I respectfully disagree.

The responsibility of a people, you and I together, to ensure an ethical government is not in the hands of a privileged few. Mandela alluded to that. In 1994 we were freed from the tyranny of a minority and as long as each one of us remembers his or her duty as a citizen, whether it is to take issue with poor service delivery or some ethnocentric /racist uttering and spouting vile and incendiary remarks we must speak out en masse.

Ask questions. Demand action be taken. Call for those in mismanagement of our country to account and resign.

Democracy is not a free ride. Not is it a self sustaining solution to over three decades of oppression and dispossession through rape, pillage and plunder of our state and natural resources.

I shudder at the thought that alongside Brazil we are, ironically, the most unequal country in the world.

This country is our home. This is where we live and just as we maintain our homes we have to maintain through vigilance and activism if we are not to abandon our homes to invaders and predators.

As a cautionary tail I raise the alarm bells "The barbarians are at the gates and no one is manning these gates."

You must get out of your comfort zones and man the gates. You can do that by registering to vote (you've another chance on 9-10 April) and to become active citizens.

In conclusion I humbly beg everyone: " let us be masters of our own destiny and self determination rather than victims and slaves to our history."
