UEFA Champions League: Who will be the Kings of Europe and Madrid?

2014-05-21 00:54

With the Champions League Final just a few days away, Lisbon will be the place to be come Saturday. I love football and I love the Champions League, having the best of the best competing against each other in the most watched club competition in the world is really exciting. In recent years seeing Quarter Final and Semi Final draws like Chelsea vs Barcelona, Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich and Manchester United vs Chelsea makes the Champions League something special.

This year just like many years before, the Champions League did not disappoint, seeing Chelsea come back against PSG and watching Real destroy every team they played against including the outgoing champions Bayern Munich. The two teams in the final are arguably the oddest pairing if analysts had to predict at the start of the Champions League campaign who would be the finalists. Atletico Madrid already made history winning the La Liga on the last day of the season at the Camp Nou against rivals Barcelona. Atletico always had amazing strikers and forward players, looking back at Fernando Torres, Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero just to name a few. Now with the likes of David Villa and Diego Costa they have a goal scoring army upfront.

As much as this Atletico team is great this season, they might be losing three of their most important players in Courtois, where he could re-join his parent club Chelsea FC if Jose feels his ready to overtake Petr Cech in goal, while Diego is looking at Turkey and Diego Costa already agreed a deal with Chelsea FC but this shouldn’t stop them come May 24 with a rather amazing group of players.

Real Madrid the other team in the final looks like champions in waiting, with the world’s best player Cristiano Ronaldo in their squad and with the most expensive player Gareth Bale they are destined to become the first club to win the Champions League for a record ten times. Listening to predictions from analysts and friends they all believe that what happened in the La Liga will happen again in Lisbon but I have to disagree, I cannot see anything other than a Real Madrid win. Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and Bale will be too strong for Atletico Madrid. Experience also plays a huge role, a lot of these Real players experienced Champions League Finals or World Cup Finals and know how to handle the pressures that come with playing a final.

Looking at May 24 in detail, I see it being a very close game. With Atletico probably getting one goal but Real will get three and win nevertheless. Ronaldo will definitely live up to expectations and so will Diego Costa.  However I wish both teams well and I know at the end of the day, we as fans will have 90 minutes of pure football joy.

I know it might be premature but I am already looking forward to next seasons Champions League, seeing Champions League football at Anfield again will be quite a spectacle, English league winners Manchester City with all their stars will have huge pressure on them to do well in the 2014/2015 Champions League. We won’t be seeing Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United in the next CL season which also puts a lot of questions in my mind when considering the futures of RVP and Rooney because as we all know, every single world class player believes they deserve to play Champions League football.

I think what excites me the most is seeing how Chelsea FC will do in Europe next season, with a killer striker in Diego Costa and having arguably the most flashy midfield in Hazard, Oscar, Ramires, Willian and Salah with a rather air tight defence and a special goal keeper. I really believe next year will be year we see both City and Chelsea really succeed in Europe, they might be my guess to be in next year’s final if they miss each other through the knockout stages.

I guess Barcelona and Manchester United will need to rebuild their squad for next season. I think what I will miss the most away from the world class football and beautiful stadiums that the Champions League games are played in, has to be the Champions League anthem. Don’t we all love that anthem!

To conclude I see this result in the final:

Real Madrid 3-1 Atletico Madrid

I also see the following transfers happening in this transfer window:

Di Maria to Arsenal FC

Sagna to Manchester City

Diego Costa to Chelsea FC

Ashley Cole to Manchester United or Arsenal FC

Jack Rodwell to Everton FC

Mangala to Chelsea FC or Manchester City

Cavani to Manchester United
