Updates From the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting

2012-01-23 07:51

Davos has begun. Started off with a day in Zurich, which against all expectations, delivered a fabulous day and I found myself throwing my jacket over my arm. Tiefencastel, a town an hour out of Davos where I will spend my nights, is not as generous.

The ascension on Davos for the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting seems much like when Joburgers descend upon Cape Town over the festive. The Joburgers take over, and the Cape Townians (myself included) look upon them with contempt, hoping to take their city back as soon as possible. More than 2600 leaders will attend Davos 2012 to ‘jointly, boldly and strategically – to improve the state of the world for future generations’.

I am attending as the sole Global Shaper for the Johannesburg/Cape Town Hub. The Global Shapers network worldwide is a similar theme to the Young Global Leaders initiate, but for those in their 20’s and for the first this age group consisting of 70 people is participating in WEF.

Davos consists of a string of sessions; some public where anyone can sign up; and some private where that community invites you join the session. This is the background music to what seems to be a hive of business meetings and networking.

Two major upcoming events on my calendar.

1.    The South African Briefing on Wednesday. A lunch President Zuma flanked by Trevor Manual, Rob Davies, Elizabeth Peters, Pravin Gordhan, Edna Molewa and Ebrahim Patel.

2.    The Closing Plenary/Session on Sunday entitled ‘The Future across Generations’ where I am a panellist along with Klaus Schwab, founder of WEF, Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank and 3 of my fellow Global Shapers.

So if you have a powerful opinion to share, about the challenges or solutions for South Africa or the world, let me hear from you!  Mail me at crystal@wiredcommunications.co.za

The expected ‘Occupy Davos’ campaign, echoing the Occupy Wall Street effort, will be adding another spin to this. Feels particularly weird that by attending Davos I am part of what is being protested against when I never considered myself as such.

Will be blogging everyday from Davos and can try to cover questions you have and this elusive event.
