The recent shooting and killings at a Sikh temple in the United States of America are against every divine and human laws and need to be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Terrorizing innocent people and shedding blood constitute a form of injustice that cannot be tolerated and accepted.

Every conscience driven human who values freedom of religion and human life should be unified against all those who terrorize innocent children, woman and men, and those who permit mass murder and destruction.

My sympathies and thoughts go out to the bereaved families, their friends and to the Sikh community at this very distressing time and also to all those affected by these brutal acts of cruelty and satanic behaviour.

Moreover, what’s equally painful and disturbing is the need to highlight the fact that Sikhs are not Muslims by some quarters of the media. Sure, Sikhs are not Muslims and nor are they Jews and Christians, just to name a few, but to repeatedly lay emphasis on the difference between Muslims and Sikhs can unjustly fuel hostility towards Muslims and increase Islamophobia. Journalists and members of every community should avoid any expression that promotes evils such as racism, classism, xenophobia and bigotry towards religious or other minority groups.

The focus should not be on whether Sikhs are Muslims or not; rather we should reinforce and remind ourselves that the challenges ahead are enormous and it is therefore time for us all to stand together to put out the fire of global terrorism, violence and hatred.

There is no link between Islam, terrorism and bloodshed. The violence and terrorist acts carried out by some groups or individuals in different parts of the world are not the teachings of Islam.

Murder, other forms of violence like wars, oppression and occupation are an evil of our species and are totally unacceptable. It is an obscenity, the evil of our time that all conscience driven people must work to eradicate.

Every attack against civilians in any part of the world, against any nationality, creed, race or religious sect, must be condemned in the strongest possible of terms. The main problem facing the world today is ignorance and the absence of truth, equality and justice.

Violence, wars and terrorism, unfortunately, plagues our era, but so do injustices and inequalities.

The solution and retort to such violence and terrorist threats can be found only in social justice, equality, human rights and a life of dignity for all.
