Was Vuzu Rich Kids a hit or a miss?

MICASA’s lead vocalists J Something and Media Producer and Mogul Dale Herbst have just taken South African media production to the next level.  They have recently launched Something’s Cool which brings two different minds together to create a new innovative concept to South African television.

They are behind the hit show Vuzu Rich Kids and “Something’s Cooking” hosted by Joao himself not forgetting “Your Perfect Sishebo” season two. J believes that the show is completely different to the first season which was produced by another company. He said that they actually started from scratch and built it up again. Adding celebrities like Maps Maponyane and Lerato Kganyago as guests on the show, with a start stuck panel of judges and a comedian of a host in Mpho Popps surely the show will continue to grow from strength to strength.

I was offered to be on Rich Kids, just after the third episode which I declined. I just didn’t believe that the show links very well to my brand and the message that I am trying to give to our youth. Nevertheless the show took off instantly since it hasn’t really been done before. With its rather catchy advert a month before the first episode, social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram were all hyped up for the show. The show’s ratings went off the charts, trending every single week in the top 5 hashtags on South African Twitter. The show is currently airing on Vuzu Amp which is for premium subscribers only but will be aired later in the year on the mainstream Vuzu channel which will obviously attract even more people to the show.

However the show didn’t have all its own way, with many young people questioning the outcome of having such a show in South Africa where poverty and unemployment still affects a large number of the youth.  Another issue was the fact that one of the Rich Kids were “fronting” by using his friend’s house to shoot his episode however J and Dale have addressed this issue moving forward saying that they have added a new step to the screening process when it comes to choosing these rich kids.

J also reassured me when I asked him about the planning around a “rich kid” and his/her day. A lot of these shows require people to follow a sheet of paper stating exactly what needs to be done and who to meet just to make the show more interesting and controversial. J stated that they allow the Rich Kids the opportunity of planning out their own day. Overall I believe that some of the youth are actually motivated by the show and developed goals of progression.

Moving forward, Something’s Cool plans on monopolizing the TV production market. With a few new shows coming up in the near future and with a team that shines with productivity, hard work, innovative minds and a wonderful contact base I am almost certain that they will be winning awards and accolades in the very near future.

I wish J, Dale and the rest of the Something’s Cool team all the best for the future.
