We all belong here...

The past few months have been hectic! The fees must fall campaign had a tremendous impact on South African society. We have all been affected by it, whether we want to admit it or not! We’ve all been shocked by cars being set to fire, people disrupting universities and the general chaos surrounding the whole phenomenon.

The latest however, is something that is very worrying to me. Apparently some of the students protesting at one of the universities were singing: “Kill the Boer”! I thought we were long past those days... It seems not... The whole issue of fees must fall now gets a racial undertone! I am shocked!

In a country where we are trying to build towards a better future, statements like these belong in the gutter. We can’t afford to go back to the days where race dictated our every move. We are supposed to build a non-racial society... Statements like “Kill the Boer” constitutes hate speech! It is the very thing that breaks and divides society along racial lines.

The so-called Boers also have something to contribute to South Africa. Yes we’ve made mistakes in the past, but it is in the past. It is time to move forward. Time to move beyond race and hate!

Is there hope for our future. I believe there is. But it is conditional. It all depends on how we behave towards each other, the choices we make and the way we conduct ourselves, especially in public.

We need to reach out to each other, to look beyond race and to abolish all kinds of hate speech and racism. I wonder if it’s possible? I hope it is...

South Africa offers so much to all of us. There is so much potential in this multicultural society of ours. And each of us has something to contribute. And that is exactly my point. We all have something to contribute. Red, white, pink, black, African, non-African and yes even the Boers.

Don’t underestimate the so-called Boers. And don’t generalise about the so-called Boers. We are a diverse group of people, all with different talents and abilities. And that is exactly why this country needs us. We are a talented group of people and we have a right to be here. We pay our taxes. We have a right to vote. And most of all we have human rights – exactly those rights that are violated by hate speech and statements like “Kill the Boer!”.

I can’t believe this is happening on the campus of a university. People attending universities are supposed to be intelligent. They are the leaders of the future. But with statements like the above, where will they lead us?

I hope all those involved read my piece. And I hope they think long and hard about what they are doing. The claim to want a better future, but they are creating the exact opposite. We will be paying a price if people go around making these kinds of statements...

Let’s do some introspection and think about where we are heading, for today is yesterday’s tomorrow. Our present behaviour will impact the future of our country. And it will affect all of us, for we all belong here...
