We also deserve a place in the sun...

Afrikaners are not “plesierig” anymore. The reason? The current political climate is anything but contributing towards a positive state of mind in South Africa. Things are looking bleak with regard to a lot of aspects. Our president isn’t accountable for his actions. Politicians are corrupt. Crime soars high. Apart from that the economy has slowed down. Things are hard! Life is hard! For everybody! That goes for Afrikaners too!

The fact that we benefited from the previous political dispensation does not change the present political dilemma that we find ourselves in. Our country is in shambles, not to mention in darkness when it comes to Escom. This brings me to the next point.

Afrikaners are here to stay. We also contribute towards this country. Our money is good enough for tax. We provide jobs when we run our own businesses. We abide by the law. We work for what we have.

Yet whenever Afrikaners try to do something for themselves or when they promote their culture and language, it is perceived as racism. How can that be? We don’t judge Africans for being African when they behave in an African way.

Why can’t we preserve our culture and language without being ostracised for it? When we try to protect our right to receive education in our mother tongue, we don’t do that to discriminate. Other parts of the population in this country are free to be educated in English or if possible another language. If that means separate classes as in the case of the University of the Free State, then so be it…

Secondly we have a history and a culture that we would like to preserve. Yes I know I previously stated that the statue of Cecil John Rhodes must fall. However the situation regarding statues has gotten totally out of hand, even to the extent where certain citizens protested Madiba’s statue! How ridiculous is that?

Afrikaners are part of this country. We love this country! We want things to work out and get better for everybody. However we also want to be free to be who we are. We want to remain true to our own identities and our own culture. Why can’t we have a place in the sun of South Africa?

We have come far since apartheid. A lot has changed! We no longer want to seize everything for ourselves, but we do want a part of the action. Please allow us to grow and to flourish under the African sun. We are part of the soil of this country too. We also have a contribution to make in our own and very Afrikaans way. Don’t bash us, just because you can… Give us a chance! You might be surprized at the outcome. Not all of us are racists. What’s more trying to preserve our culture and the Afrikaans language does not constitute racism! Just like Africans are proudly African, Afrikaners are proudly Afrikaans. Let’s start over.

Let’s be democratic in the true sense of the word, for democracy allows everyone a fair chance. Let’s build towards a better future for all, but without forgetting that we can’t deny who we are. We can’t deny our race, nor our language or our culture. We are who we are. That means that Afrikaners too have a unique and distinct identity. Allow us to remain true to that identity, for we also deserve a place in the sun!
