We are one South Africa…

The current situation in our country, leaves a lot of us to ponder on what the future holds...The latest crisis is the severe drought. It is an immense problem that has the potential to affect each and every one of us.

South Africa is a country of contrasts. On the one hand there are those who are battling to put the most basic of foods on the table. On the other hand there are people who sleep between silk sheets. It is a tragic situation…

Currently it may seem as if the drought only has a bearing on farmers. People who are standing on the side may feel that it has nothing to do with them. However we are all going to pay a very expensive price, speaking from an economic point of view. Life in South Africa is not cheap or easy. The drought will eventually impact the price and availability of food.

I am no economist, but I do have common sense. I know that we all need to eat and I know that South Africans in general struggle to afford food. Even those of us who are more privileged, have to think twice before we spend.

This brings me back to the issue of the farmers. One man has already taken his own life. There are farmers who are about to lose everything. It is not just an agricultural problem. It is a South African problem. Therefore I believe we should all pitch in. A fund has already been established to try and get financial support for the farmers. I think it’s important that we should all contribute in some way. Whether it’s buying water, donating financially or just saying a prayer, we need to do whatever we can…

The problem is complex and there is no easy solution. The farmers need a miracle! What’s more they need the government to support them. I know South Africa has a lot of problems. I know there are people who are worse off than white farmers. Yet when it comes to food, we are all affected. The government needs to shape up! Our economy is about to go into a downward spiral…

If we don’t want to go under, now is the time to act. I want to appeal to all South Africans to try and contribute financially to the fund that has been established for the farmers. If we want eat, we need to act. I am no prophet of doom, but I am also a realist. In a few months’ time we are all going to feel the effect of this drought.

Let’s all start praying as well. We can’t go about our lives in a normal way while others are suffering. This is a crisis of huge proportions…We all want to live, we all want to eat…We are all facing this problem. It is not only the farmers. It affects all of us… We are one South Africa…Let’s shape up!
