We need an independent watchdog to oversee professional sports?

2016-01-14 16:25

We need an independent watchdog with investigative and prosecuting powers vis-a-vis professional sports.

In the light of the Fifa scandal why not. It's no hyperbole therefore that when professional sports with billions in US dollars in sponsorship came to the fore, corruption was champing at the bits.

Cricket is still a beautiful game even though we have such outbreaks and I honestly thought that the "devil made me do it" revelation by Hansie Cronje served as a warning signal against future outbreaks! I was wrong.

We all were shamed by the Hansie Cronje scandal and now we have this current outrageous allegation of match fixing as reported in your paper (For example, The Mercury: "Worst scandal since Hansie" and the Daily News "Cricket scandals disappoint legends" : 14.1.2016)

I recall the IPL scandal and that for every corrupter there is a corruptee and with large volumes of money involved I won't be surprised if these allegations are true.

CSA must, for now, appoint an independent tribunal to investigate and prosecute those who have harmed the reputation and image of the noble sport that produced legends such as Donald Bradman and Sachin Tendulkar. Cricket lovers and gourmets taken for a ride, deserve to see justice been done and harsh consequences for those who have been exposed after due process.

What I find galling is that thus far no one, in South Africa, has been jailed or punished anywhere in the world since the judge and jury in such cases have a vested interest in the outcome.
