Women it is Possible!

2014-09-10 19:53

A women who takes no interest in her development is a problem to the society at large. Today after a month dedicated to women I woke up to a lot of emotions around women empowerment and issues of inequality. I write this piece because I am “annoyed” by my fellow “sisters” who blame men for all the challenges they encounter. I am not disputing the levels on inequality and many issues faced by women, however I am advocating for women to take full responsibility for their own empowerment and development.

The issue of empowerment is something internal, yes there are many factors influencing it but greatness starts within. It has been scientifically proven that the brain has no gender. I am not disputing the glass ceiling effect on development issues around women. I think we spend a lot of time trying to identify and possibly solve issues that keep us as women from achieving power and success equal to that of men. Should we even strive to be equal to men? It is always said when you start comparing yourself to someone you have failed already.

Women need to move away from blaming men for issues around their development and take ownership. I write as a young women who work in a men’s world. There is a certain misconception that men feel threated by the development of women or successful women. Again it has nothing to do with gender, society is competitive whether we like it or not. Some say men are born selfish and not always open to the development of women but I beg to differ!!! I once questioned a man who was about to register for his Master’s degree while his wife had a matric certificate only behind her name. I thought to myself does this not bother him in any sense? Why is he not encouraging the wife to something? Ever heard a saying that you can take a horse to the water but cannot force the horse to drink the water?

Women need to be more open to new opportunities and possibly start creating their own opportunities. It can be done look at the likes of Thuli Madonsela, Joyce Banda, Natalie du Toit, and many more doing great things. if you look closely at the journey of the few women mentioned it is not an easy one, were much is given much is required. Women it is Possible!!!  And it starts with you.
