Youth Day, Hail SA’s Top Three Finest Youth!

2015-06-15 17:10

Perhaps this June 16, this youth day, it is fitting to roll out the drums in celebration of the three finest top national spokespersons of South Africa’s heavyweight political parties. All are still in their youth!

Here they are: Mbuyiseni Ndlozi of the Economic Freedom Fighters, Marius "Manqoba" Redelinghuys of the Democratic Alliance and Zizi Kodwa of the African National Congress.

They are genius Communication High Commands aka national spokespersons of their respective political parties.  They are the personification of June 16, what ideally our youth should be like: dedicated and in the cusp of leadership.

They are the best and the brightest in the smart category of brain power. They are behaviorally aligned to the emerging and evolving South African political context that demands nuanced engagements.

Solid, sober and intelligent; their brand is cool and it is modern. They speak to educate and to mobilize.

They are engaging the public passionately. They are principled and focused with a range of palette of skills and experiences. They have managed to bring tons of freshness, youthfulness and new thinking into framing national issues in the public domain on behalf of their political parties.

So how shall we begin describing their talents?

Zizi Kodwa is increasing defining the ANC spokespersonship away from Jackson Mthembu’s brand of public communication that was characterized by bootstrap authoritarian subculture, composing songs that we must not buy newspapers.

Zizi Kodwa is doing well in recognizing that extreme partisanship verbal warfare does not always do well for the ANC.

Then there is Marius "Manqoba" Redelinghuys, spokesperson for the DA.

He is nicknamed Manqoba perhaps because he seems to be following in the footsteps of Johnny Clegg. Johnny Clegg's brand of music has shattered barriers in the country into thousand pieces, opening a whole new world in South Africa. In France, where Johnny Clegg enjoys a massive following, he is called Le Zulu ka Shaka Blanc – the white Zulu.

It is great honor that now the British Queen is awarding Johnny Clegg the Office of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). But may be the Order could have been conferred way back in his pick around the time he was about 25 years of age.

Marius Redelinghys's skills within the DA is that of a damage limitation expert perpetually roaming the media savannah in search of damaging stories to shoot down.

Marius' honest frank slogan to acknowledge the un-acknowledgeable that: Blacks are right to mistrust Whites shows sheer leadership. That kind of free-telling puts him in the middle, effectively making him a unifier – a practical rainbow kind of a guy. He has met Nelson Mandela in person and must have learned a great deal of wisdom from the grand daddy.

Mbuyiseni Ndlozi of the EFF is detail minded, has the ability to explain, clarify, educate and has the glow that help him maintain smooth relationships across. He is currently studying for a punishing PhD program at Wits that focuses on social movement creation for a new era of democracy and the paradigms of mass movement protests with special focus to Black Youth Politics.

He is very slow in response to smears externally and internally within the EFF, but when responding he strike hard like a doped bull.

Mbuyiseni Ndlozi’s task is made even tougher, fronting for a political party that seeks to break through the political stasis. A political party that rejects the softly-softly approach to the sufferings of the common masses. A political party that embraces the direct action orthodoxy: Occupy this, Occupy that revolution.

Gone are the days when party political communicators are simply following on the footsteps of the antiquated blueprint, protocol and behavioral norm of Joseph Goebbels, the infamous Nazi Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda under Adolf Hitler.

The emerging political terrain calls for nuanced and intelligent exchange of ideas. It does not permit discoverable lies, political hypocrisy, character defamation, and obfuscation, enticing vague language, self-compromising talk, barmy delusion, and social irrationality or being a restless junkyard dog in the villa.

The arc of time has imported a paradigm shift in the temper of public discourse, and all three are responding excellently.

National Spokespersons of political parties today are first and foremost political scientists and political strategists. They communicate politics – to impress, to influence to lead. It is about leadership.

Politics represent the upper structure of leadership in any society. And the men and the women speaking for the dominant political parties have an immense task of daily interacting with the public, educating, clarifying and breaking the internal party developments.

While this troika of South Africa’s youthful High Command communicators have diverse qualities and represent political parties with clashing temperaments, they share common essentials: they are doing the best work for their respective parties, working at the best level of their abilities and enhancing social cohesion and building a better South Africa in many ways.
