Youth missing the correct mind-set…but it’s not our fault!

It’s really great reading the Mail and Guardians Top 200 Influential Young People of the year, seeing the likes of DJ Sbu on this list makes us feel so warm inside thinking the future of SA is in safe hands. Our country has a 62% majority of the youth in relation to the whole population. That directly means that 32.24 Million people in South Africa are under the age of 35. We influence the future of tomorrow. However we are failing dismally not because we don’t have talented youth but because the mind set of these youth members are not where they supposed to be. Millions of young people are wasting their opportunity and talent by spending more time partying, taking drugs and drinking excessively. We have intellectuals, doctors, lawyers and world class soccer players among us but they don’t get to those professions because of the lack of belief in themselves.  What puts countries like China and America above us is the idea of allowing the young talented people in the country the opportunity to take responsibility on a large scale and believing in them and their abilities, giving them the tools needed to become the best.

Education is key, I urge every single member of the youth to complete their matric, don’t just pass matric but set your result goals high, make sure it’s strong enough to get you into a commercial university. Our education system in relation to a pass rate vs university entrance is shocking us, building our youth up just to see them fail and head back into poverty and struggle. I request that we change the pass rate for matric to 50%, yes our matric pass rate results will drop, but what really amazes me is the courage my fellow young people have to rise up to challenges, set the bar high and watch each and every one of them rise above it. We need to have more faith in our people, we need to allow them to grow and develop. If I never believed personally that I could become someone amazing I would have never done half the things I did today, it comes with confidence in yourself and belief.

I want us as the youth to learn skills at a young age, let us become financially savvy at 17, let us open up businesses at 18 and start investing by 19, let us make our first million at 20 and start buying property at 21. Let us reach the age of 22 which is the normal age of finishing university, knowing that we have skills already that the average 26-27 year old has. This stimulates growth among the youth , being above the norm will always motivate someone more, I mean personally becoming the youngest youth president in South Africa at just 19, made me want to do more things quicker and better. Success builds success, I encourage our youth to grow up with the mind set of building success in whatever they do. Someone very close to me told me the other day, it is very important that no matter what you do or take part in make sure you are always the best; now imagine if every single person followed that rule. We would have the highest standard of quality in our country.

We never fail; remember that, we just learn. Learning is a part of life, I have learnt so many times every single day and that’s what makes me constantly improve and become better. Let us pull each other up and fight against all the negativity and failed systems our country holds, let us be the generation that pushes past normal and becomes the best.

By 2020 I am personally challenging the youth of this country to become the #1 most prominent and influential youth population in the whole world.
