Zuma's Apologies for the Past

2015-02-19 20:50

The rare interaction of President Zuma and Pieter Mulder, the Leader of the Freedom Front Plus, is not on the surface – it goes very deep, and both these two imminent gentlemen understand it. You could see the more President Zuma looked at Pieter Mulder the more he got deeply emotional and he just went on talking and talking about the Afrikaaner…

Truth be told, the Afrikaaner appeared the most committed of any White group to the idea of realizing South Africa and Africa. They seemed to have taken more seriously their domiciling in Africa along with Africans and are happy to call themselves Afrikaaners – a term derived from Africa.

The properties of South Africa at the basic level is that South Africa is formed of two elements. Those elements are the African and the Afrikaaner. (By this I am not putting down the other groups).

It was Nelson Mandela who recognised these elements and struck a unifier national note that is still a national reference point for both of these two primary and basic elements.

The plight of the Afrikaaner has always been his recognition of the work he has done in fashioning and making of South Africa as a modern institution. But of course fine and yes the Afrikaaner did that but at what bloody price?

Now most of Africans silently understand – otherwise it could not have been possible for Nelson Mandela to unite Africans in general and his ANC along the acceptation and notion of forgetting White man’s immoral ills and form one united South Africa.

President Jacob Zuma in engaging Pieter Mulder the champion of Afrikaaner aspirations attempted to make this historic reference to the basic properties of South Africa. President Zuma clearly is very alive on this that even in his first term as President he created a Cabinet position for Pieter Mulder.

We both are aware that our daily national headache and problem is this constant lapse into old tired habits patterns of negative race relations, recently being exhibited in our schools. And on the internet forums the way South Africans savage one another across racial divides is nothing short of scandalous. The verbal dehumanization!

But I still believe that we are one people.  I believe that together, we can do great things, even when the odds are facing us everyday.

It must fall on all of us how best to anchor the rapid transformation of all aspects of our lives.

As more and more of our schools are shaping into diversity arenas – we should use our differences as the greatest gift. The actions of our school principals and teachers should tell every child:  Your gentle life matters and we are as committed to improving your life and seeing you highly equipped for the world.

We never had a national Parliament season in this country like we have currently. The Economic Freedom Fighters have taken the country and fixed its eyes to the right place, that is Parliament so that great debates such as these are now watched and discussed broadly even by the common person in the obscure village. Not only EFF is doing that but it also makes the current dominant parties to drop duplicity and deception, lazy bandying about of pat, tiresome phrases and omnibus stereotypes to get them focused on their best. Not only does EFF do that but it manages to make ordinary South Africans think concretely about national issues in a manner it was never done before. More and more ordinary folks are increasingly more attuned, more sophisticated, more attentive to policy debates and are more receptive to new ideas.

When it is all said and done, it is all about... SOUTH AFRICA, SOUTH AFRICA and SOUTH AFRICA! As Pieter Mulder addressed the nation: Some of us we have no place to go - South Africa is only our home.
