10 great kitchen storage ideas

Squeeze as much use as you can from every nook in your kitchen with these space-maximising ideas we found on Pinterest.

Kitchen main

So much of home life revolves around the kitchen that it’s often a challenge to find space for everything from pots and pans to delicate glassware and cleaning materials. These ideas we found on image-sharing website Pinterest show how to make the most of the space you have in your kitchen for storing the necessities.

Hang ’em high

Keep stemmed glasses stowed out of the way with these nifty glass rails. Simply screw strips of T-moulding (from hardware stores) under an overhead cabinet or a shelf inside a cabinet. Space the strips according to the size of the foot on your glasses, remembering to leave a few millimetres to allow the glasses to slide in and out smoothly.

Slim chance

Traditional narrow and deep broom cupboards aren’t always the best shape – I constantly find myself unpacking shelves to get to the stuff at the back. This wide and shallow version, neatly built onto the side of the fridge nook, gives much easier access. You could even put one behind a door if there’s enough space. You might need a handyman or cabinet-maker for this one.

Easy reach

And this way of creating it is just brilliant. Made-to-measure storage boxes are mounted on pairs of drawer pulls so you can find just the right cleaning product when you need it. If there’s a skilled DIYer in your family, you’ll find instructions here.

Planned roll-out

Board games

Cutting boards find a cosy space with this magazine rack fitted inside a pot cupboard. Most shelves inside cupboards are flush with the door so you might have to trim the middle shelf to fit the holder.

Basket case

Fruit baskets look gorgeous on a counter top but they take up so much valuable work space. So here are three clever ways to keep fruit and veg out of the way but still on display.

I like this wire basket mounted right next to the sink tap for easy rinsing. The basket also keeps air circulating around the fruit to allow the fruit to ripen evenly.

These fruit and veg baskets are in fact wall-mounted plant holders given a new job. You can mount them directly on the wall. Or, like Melissa, the mom and blogger who pinned this pic, you can protect the wall by cutting cardboard for the back of each basket and using modge podge to cover it with fabric.

Decorative wire magazine holders are used to great effect for fruit and veggies that don’t live in the fridge.

Hooked on you

A wide variety of rail and hook systems are available for kitchens. What I just love about this set-up is the use of the white plant pots for holding smaller bits and pieces. Clever and so classy.
