When I was little we treated books with huge respect, so the idea of cutting up a map book – even if it was out of date and useless – would have been taboo. But why leave dated atlases to gather dust? How much better to give old maps renewed life with these 10 fabulous ideas I found on Pinterest this week.

1. Pinterest pinwheels
A stick, a page from an old atlas, a drawing pin and – voila! – you have a classic kid’s toy. If you’ve forgotten how to make these, find instructions at http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Pinwheel.

2. Going places
Modge podge a map onto a plain tray, cover with several coats of modge podge (allow to dry after each coat and sand lightly after every five or so coats) and you can deliver dishes in style or display treasured objects with class.

3. Get your butt over there!
A chair like this could take you anywhere in the world. Modge podge a map of your dream destination (mine would be Italy) to an old chair then apply many coats of modge podge for a hardwearing surface (see No 2 above for instructions).

4. Coasting down the main road
Street maps or road maps modge podged to plain coasters (available from craft stores) make a fun and inexpensive gift (see No 2 above for instructions).
