One Direction were the big winners at the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards.
The English-Irish boyband took home three prizes at the annual ceremony, held Sunday at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow, Scotland.
The group, comprised of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, accepted wins in categories for Best Pop, Best Live and Biggest Fans despite not being able to attend in person.
"Thank you so much for everything. We really wanted to be there tonight, but we can't be. Thank you,” the singers said via video link.
Zayn, mysteriously absent from the acceptance speech, was later confirmed to have missed the recording due to an illness, reports MTV News.
It was a big night for pop stars Katy Perry, Ariana Grande and 5 Seconds of Summer as well, each following with two wins each.
Ariana, who performed her hit single Break Free, took home Best Female, a category that included competition from Katy, Taylor Swift, host Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé Knowles, who was absent from the festivities although she still managed a Best Song win for her track Pretty Hurts.
Problem hitmaker Ariana, nominated in six categories total, also scored the win for Best Song thanks to her hit track featuring Iggy Azalea.
Taking the stage for her second win, Ariana was clearly overwhelmed, with the 21-year-old American-born singer calling the night “absolutely crazy”.
Firework hitmaker Katy meanwhile took home the Best Look award and won in the Best Video category for Dark Horse.
Nicki kept the crowd going as the evening’s emcee.
"I've been learning so much about your beautiful country and culture... I've pretty much become Scottish," she mused to the star-studded crowd.
The Anaconda singer also debuted a new song and took home the prize for Best Hip-Hop, a category including stiff competition from Drake, Eminem, Iggy Azalea and Kanye West.
5 Seconds to Summer won in the Best New and Best Push categories.
Best Male went to Justin Bieber, who beat out Ed Sheeran, Eminem, Justin Timberlake and Pharrell for the gong and thanked the crowd via video.
The Worldwide Act EMA went to Chinese singer Bibi Zhou.
Other winners included Linkin Park for Best Rock and 30 Seconds to Mars for Best Alternative.
Performances rocked the crowd throughout the night, including those from Ed Sheeran, Enrique Iglesias, Royal Blood, Charli XCX and Alicia Keys, with the pregnant star proudly displaying her growing stomach while belting at the piano.
U2 also got fans on their feet with a performance of Every Breaking Wave while Ozzy Osbourne, winner of the Global Icon Award, got a special musical tribute from Simon Neil, Biffy Clyro, Miles Kennedy and Slash, who closed the show with a rendition of Crazy Train.
