The bandmates got a chance to mingle with Duke of Cambridge Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton at the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium on Thursday. And three of them have recounted their awkward interactions. Kate is 16 weeks pregnant with her second child, and 20-year-old Harry Styles made it his mission to offer his well-wishes. “I said congratulations on the bump,” he said of their meeting. “(Though) she didn’t look bumpy.”
'I said - Hi. How are you? I'm Louis'
Fellow 1D boys Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik also got a chance to brush shoulders with royalty. And Liam apparently caught a severe case of nerves over the occasion.
"It's the most nervous I think I've ever been in my life,” he admitted after meeting the pair.
However, perhaps the most eyebrow-raising account came from Louis. He revealed he was reeling over a faux pas in the way he addressed their new friends.
"I didn't say ma'am," he lamented. "I said - Hi. How are you? I'm Louis."
However, it seems the boys didn’t make too much of a bad impression on Prince William. The expectant father apparently noted he was “keeping an eye” on the One Direction boys.
The evening was filled with entertainment from popular artists from all over the world. Ellie Goulding, Demi Lovato, Ed Sheeran and Simon Cowell were among those on the bill to perform on stage in front of the Royals.
