A healthy meal for your kids: Lentil bobotie

Introducing healthy eating choices at a young age will also make it more likely that your children develop good eating habits for life. Try to involve your children with food selection and preparation by letting them choose some new things to try, by keeping fruit in a place that can be reached easily, or by allowing them to help you with cooking and baking. Try this delicious bobotie from Checkers.

  • Serves 8-10

For the vegetable mix you'll need:

  • A little water
  • 1 small onion; finely chopped
  • 1 tsp. garlic; crushed
  • 1 large carrot; grated
  • 4 medium baby marrows; grated

For the mince and lentil mix you'll need:

  • 300 g extra-lean mince
  • 200 g brown lentils; cooked
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 slices wholewheat bread

For the seasoning you'll need:

  • 1 tbsp. mild curry powder
  • ½ tsp. turmeric
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 pinch sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 pinch pepper
  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 handful almonds; slivered
  • 3 tbsp. chutney

For the topping you'll need:

  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • Few bay leaves

Do this:

Heat the oven to 180°C. Place the vegetables in a pan and stir-fry with a little water. Remove and drain in a colander. Brown the mince and then add the lentils, cooking for a further 5 min. Meanwhile, soak the bread in the milk, then mash the bread and add the mixture to the mince and lentils. For the seasoning, mix all ingredients together. Add the vegetables and seasoning to the mince and mix well. Place in a greased oven dish and bake for 10 min. While it's baking, whisk the ½ cup milk, eggs and salt in a bowl. Remove the bobotie from the oven and gently pour the milk mixture over the top. Place a few bay leaves on top and bake for a further 25 min. until the egg topping has set.

Tip: This recipe omits raisins as many children do not enjoy eating them. If you want to add some in, you can use about ½ a cup.
