Amy Adams: I’m not a grown up

accreditation

The American Hustle actress has been nominated for an Academy Award five times. But despite her successful career, Amy still feels like an inexperienced teenager on occasion. “I was like, ‘I’m 40 and I still care what people think of me; I still don’t do laundry so I’m always out of things; I’m just not a grown-up at all,’ and I had this expectation that I would be by this age,” she explained to the American edition of Vogue. “It wasn’t, ‘Oh, I’m getting old and I’m going to lose something vibrant about myself.’ It was more that I was just ‘so disappointed with myself.’ It’s just awful. Any chance for self-loathing!” The redhead overcomes her internal criticism with the help of her fiancé Darren Le Gallo and their four-year-old daughter Aviana. The couple met in 2001 at acting class and became engaged in July 2008. Amy admits their mutual juvenile behaviour is what drew them together.

‘I still don’t do laundry so I’m always out of things’

“We knew each other for a year, and I always thought he was really cute. But I was in a relationship and he was in a relationship. And I also thought: Oh, he’s a little immature,” she recalled. “But that’s, like, one of his greatest qualities. We’re both immature! And then one day, he walked into the room and I was like, ‘Oh, my Darren’s here!’ And it was just like something switched.”

Amy does her best to juggle her work commitments with her family life. But she confessed that it can be hard, despite the fact her daughter seems to take a more pragmatic approach.

“I miss her so much,” she said. “Before I left I told her, ‘Daddy’s going to take care of you.’ But she said, ‘Momma, who’s going to take care of you?’ I said, ‘I’m a grown-up. I take care of myself.’ And she said, ‘No, but you need someone to come and spend time with you.’”
