Avoid anxiety by cutting comfort food

accreditation

A huge portion of stress often comes with a side helping of biscuits and takeaway pizza. And while everyone knows that comfort eating can cause the waistline to expand, you might not realise that some of these treats could also be making you more anxious. MindBodyGreen.com has compiled a round-up of the foods that trigger anxiety, so step away from that biscuit tin!

Sugary snacks

Chocolate is a classic comfort food, with many reaching for the sweet treat when they're emotional or worried about an exam or big day at work. But all that sugar is no good for your insulin levels, which can have an effect on your mood and metabolism. It can also be addictive, meaning you start to crave it and therefore worsen the cycle. But all is not lost. If you need a chocolatey pick-me-up, just reach for one with at least 70 per cent cacao and limit yourself to one square.

Dairy

Unless you're lactose intolerant, small amounts of dairy shouldn't be a problem for your body. But comfort food is often loaded with cheese, which can become an issue. If you have too much cow's cheese, you might find yourself suffering from fatigue, a foggy brain and irritability. Try switching to goat's cheese instead, it's thought to be easier for your body to digest and works well in a salad, burger or omelette.

Fat

Saturated fats can be found in most savoury comfort foods, particularly ready meals and takeaways. Of course your body needs fat, but this should be of the positive kind. Nuts and avocadoes will give you energy and none of that sluggish feeling you experience after indulging in bad fatty foods. Your body will also benefit from polyunsaturated fats, which are found in salmon and coconut oil.
