Her mom spent nearly 10 years battling cancer and when she died in 2007 Angelina Jolie was at her bedside.
She saw the toll the disease took, and she swore the same thing wouldn't happen to her.
Which is why earlier this year the Oscar-winning actress opted to have a double mastectomy. And when the news broke earlier this month the world praised her for her decision.
Not many people knew about her decision but after she had successful reconstructive surgery at the end of last month she went public with her experience in a column in the New York Times. Her aim was to make other women aware of preventative surgery.
