(32) and Rita Botes (31) were about to give up when Rita finally fell pregnant.
But five months after Wiehan’s arrival their joy turned to unutterable grief when the baby and his day mother were brutally murdered. The crime has sent shockwaves throughout the country.
Wiehan’s tiny body was found under a bed in a bedroom where it’s believed the killer tried to push it out of sight.
The body of carer Margrietha de Goede (66) was found under a rug in her garage. Everyone in Delmas, Mpumalanga, knows her as the loving woman who took care of their children so well.
“Something has to be done about crime in this country. Wiehan shouldn’t become just another statistic,” Wiets says sadly. Then he adds bitterly, “He was so friendly he probably smiled at his killer.”
