Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mphela has been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Mphela who scored Bafana’s winning goal against Egypt in an AFCON qualifier on Tuesday was pulled over by police in Sandton in the early hours of Monday morning in Sandton.
The player had apparently been celebrating his last minute win the whole weekend, according to various Tuesday newspapers. It has been reported that Mphela was then taken to the police station where blood tests were performed to test his alcohol level.
Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini confirmed that Mphela was arrested on a charge of drunken driving and would appear in court in August.
His manager also confirmed that “Killer” Mphela, as he is known to soccer fans, had been drinking but denied that his client was over the legal alcohol limit.
Mphela has been released on R1000 bail and will appear in court in August of this year.
