Benedict Cumberbatch on old-school engagement announcement

Last week the short confirmation appeared in British newspaper The Times, confirming the 38-year-old actor is to marry theatre director Sophie Hunter. Some were surprised that the star chose that route rather than announcing the news via he spokesperson, but he doesn't understand what the fuss is about. “It’s what I would have done if I wasn’t famous. It’s a normal thing to do in my country,” he told USA TODAY. “It was a way of telling our friends who we hadn’t been able to tell before [they saw] some grainy shot of a ring on her finger.” The news was doubly surprising as Benedict and Sophie (36) haven't been linked for that long. Although the pair met while they were shooting 2009's Burlesque Fairytales, they didn't get together romantically until earlier this year.

Benedict was speaking at the Los Angeles premiere of his new movie The Imitation Game, in which he plays Alan Turing, who helped crack the enigma code during World War II.

Also there was his co-star Matthew Goode, who was impressed with the way Benedict announced his engagement. The pair get along very well, with Matthew hinting he'd like to throw his pal a bachelor party.

"He’s filming Richard III [character Benedict plays in TV show The Hollow Crown] tomorrow," Matthew explained, when asked if the festivities would take place after the red carpet. "He’s getting on a plane so we won’t have much time. We’ll do it in New York maybe, at my place."

Also at the event was Allen Leech, who voiced his hope of being involved too.

"If I get invited and I’m there, I would be very, very happy," the Downton Abbey star laughed.
