The fight for a spot in the final 10 of Idols season 8 started with the boys who performed 2013 radio hits at the State Theatre in Pretoria yesterday.
Musa Sukwene (26) from Mpumalanga opened the show with his rendition of Chris Brown’s Don’t Judge Me. The judges agreed to it not having been his strongest performance.
His was followed by Innocent Mabushe (27) from Phalaborwa and Gauteng’s Philip Dube (20) who also gave lukewarm performances that failed to impress the judges.
Things started to heat up when Capetonian Lee-Ron Malgas (18) sang Eric Benet’s Harriet Jones, a hit on Kaya FM, with both Unathi Msengana and Randall Abrahams agreeing his performance had been the best up to that point.
Pop sensation Rihanna was the muso of choice for both Sonke Mazibuko (21) and Brenden Ledwaba (19) who sang two of her radio chart-topping hits. “That was great,” said Randall on Sonke’s version of Diamonds while Gareth Cliff proclaimed Brendon “just became the guy to beat,” after his performance of Stay, a massive hit on East Coast Radio.
The show ended with the Western Cape’s Benjamin Tainton (19) singing 94.5 Kfm’s Avicii hit Wake Me Up. “The only way you will get into the top 10 is with charity,” said Gareth, but both Unathi and Randall disagreed.
Voting lines close today, with the top 5 guys being announced tomorrow at 7.30 pm on this season’s first live-show broadcast. Next Sunday will be the girls’ turn to show the judges why they deserve a spot in the top 10.
