Cameron Diaz thinks women go wrong in relationships by picking “the same person over and over again”. The 42-year-old actress is currently in a relationship with musician Benji Madden. But while she won’t confirm or deny rumours that the couple are engaged, she did open up about what it takes to have a successful union.
'You have to find someone in the same place as you are'
“You have to find someone in the same place as you are. Timing is everything,” she revealed to the American edition of Cosmopolitan. “If you get into a relationship where you want something the guy doesn’t want, it’s never gonna work. You’re never going to get him to be in that place.”
Cameron has had a number of high profile romances over the years, including Justin Timberlake, Jared Leto and Alex Rodriguez. But the Annie star believes women only figure things out when it comes to love as they get older.
“No matter how old you are, finding the guy who’s in the same place as you are and wants to show up is the only way a relationship works, period,” she said. “You make the same mistake over and over again until you learn your lesson. We girls sometimes do the thing where we pick the same person over and over again – they look and seem different, but deep down, they’re the same. And that’s on us.”
Cameron met Benji earlier this year after being introduced by Nicole Richie, who is married to his twin, Joel. While the courtship is going strong, there were reports in October that the 35-year-old was not happy with his girlfriend trying to improve his diet.
“She wants him to live a much healthier lifestyle,” a source told America’s OK! magazine. “She’s got him a trainer and put him on a gluten-free diet. [He] hates it.”
