Case against mom who strangled daughter postponed because she isn’t 'emotionally stable enough'

Soniya Koekemoer who has been accused of strangling her nine-year-old daughter is reportedly too emotional to discuss the tragic incident.

Soniya (34) appeared briefly in the Vanderbijlpark regional court for the murder of her daughter, Michelle. She showed up wearing a blue jersey and her hair was untidy. She only fleetingly glanced in the direction of the benches where her mother, Elize Viljoen, and her stepfather, Dawie, with whom she lives in Sasolburg, sat.

Her lawyers asked for the case to be postponed because she is not yet emotionally stable enough to plead. Judge Buks Viljoen granted the request and she will appear in court again on Thursday 11 August.

Soniya faces the charge of the murder of her daughter Michelle. On Thursday 9 June she called the police and said that an intruder had broken into their home and strangled Michelle with a rope.

She alleges that she also woke up with a rope around her neck. She was taken into custody shortly after the incident when police found dagga in her home. She has since admitted that she is responsible for Michelle’s death.
