The Benoni golden girl looked at least 15 kg heavier than her usually reed-slim self when she was snapped on the set of her new movie, Tully, in Vancouver, Canada.

Gone are the rock-hard abs, the lithe legs and the chiselled chin and in their place is a rather – well, mumsier person in jeans and a checked shirt.

But mumsy is what it’s all about: Charlize plays a frazzled mom of three who is gifted a night-nanny by her brother. Hesitant at first to accept the extravagance, she soon forms a special bond with the young girl named Tully (played by Mackenzie Davis).

There is much speculation that Charlize’s curvier look is the result of a fat suit – but if her past is anything to go, it’s likely to be all her own doing.

She’s known for her method acting and put on 15 kg for her Oscar-winning role as prostitute-turned-serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003’s Monster.

“It wasn’t about getting fat,” she said at the time. “It was about getting to a place where I felt closer to how Aileen was living.”

Last year the 41-year-old also shaved off all her hair for her role as one-armed action heroine in the sci-fi hit Mad Max: Fury Road.

There's no stopping our Charlz!
