A father from Colorado, in the US, has confessed to deliberately trying to kill his two-year-old son by crashing his car while the toddler's seat belt was unbuckled. On 21 August Nathan Weitzel (29) took toddler Isaiah to the park, where he planned the murder.
He reportedly told the investigating officers that he then drove his car around the neighbourhood at 120 km/h because, "I was trying to kill my son. I did it on purpose."
After looking for a "good place to crash", he rammed his car into a parked vehicle.
According to the court documents, this was all because "he did not think he was man enough to raise a child".
He also admitted that he was high on cocaine at the time of the crash.
The little boy sustained a concussion, a broken leg and a cut to his forehead that required 20 stitches.
Witnesses have described the accident as horrific to watch.
"There were no screech marks. There was no hitting brakes. Just this horrible sound," said Cindy Rosa, a witness who called emergency services.
"I heard a youngster crying but didn't see him at first and then finally we saw the top of the baby's head and saw the dad hitting it like he was annoyed by the crying that was happening," Cindy said.
"There's no words. I just fell to the floor and I started crying and I kept saying, my baby boy, my poor boy," Nancy Lopez, the toddler's mother, said.
Nancy, who's not romantically involved with Nathan, shares custody with him.
"He needs to be in jail for a long time."
Nathan has been charged with a number of offences, including attempted first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in serious injury, second-degree assault and vehicular assault.
A GoFundMe page has also been set up to help pay for Isaiah’s medical bills. He's been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home.
"He's such a strong boy and I thank God every day that he's alive and keeps healing and hopefully, eventually, he'll be able to walk again," Nancy said.
