While singer Karlien van Jaarsveld’s happiness knew no bounds after her recent engagement to Joe Breytenbach, her ex-husband, Derick Hougaard, took a moment to pay tribute to his former teammates. Shortly after the announcement on Saturday afternoon the former Blue Bull retweeted articles about his his ex-wife’s engagement. Many fans gave him encouragement.

On Monday the rugby hero posted a melancholy message in which he said he was longing for his teammates on Facebook. “Why do we lose contact and why is life so busy that we all use it as an excuse,” he wrote.
“Life is so busy I don’t get to everything. Although there is a measure of truth to this we must make time for what’s important.”
Derick wrote about his longing for his former teammates, “guys who literally put their lives on the line for me. Who protected me. Who were my brothers for a decade.”
The sports star admits it’s difficult to thank his teammates for everything they did for him. “No words are moving enough to describe my feelings,” he says. But he doesn’t regret anything, except not playing more matches with certain “legends”.
“Thank you that we were able to do things many people thought impossible. We were successful,” he adds.
Many of Derick’s fans shared words of support below his entry. “Dear Derick, with my tail between my legs I apologise from the depths of my heart,” wrote Nikita Adendorff. “It’s a woman’s instinct to stand up for other women, and that’s what I did for Karlien. But I was shocked to my soul to hear that she was engaged, of all things, because your rings haven’t been off long enough to gather dust.”
“Our darling, courage,” wrote Suzie Niemandt. Veronica Venter wrote, “If I could be in front of you I would give you a hug and say, ‘Everything is going to be all right; everything will work out as it should.’”
Derick ended his post with the words, “Thanks for everything, but this is just the beginning. I hope we have many more good, golden moments waiting.”
