Detox the natural way

accreditation

If the excess of your summer holiday has left you feeling bloated and out of shape, it can be tempting to try out the latest diet hype in order to detoxify your body. But dedicated 'detox' teas can burn a hole in your pocket and won't beat the power of nature.

Hot water and lemon

Those in the know have been starting their mornings with a mug of hot water and a slice of lemon for as long as they can remember. But if you're new to the detox scene, it's an easy way to kick things off. This zesty drink kick starts the digestion process and helps alkalise the body.

Ginger

Whether you love it or loathe it: ginger plays an important part in gastrointestinal health and is anti-inflammatory, detoxifies and helps you manage your weight. Even if you're not a huge fan, try incorporating some of the spice into your diet. Season a stir-fry with it or try it in a tea version.

Herbal tea

There are plenty of costly tea cleanses on the market, but why shell out when you can get detoxifying teas for a fraction of the price at the humble supermarket? Green tea is one of the best for cleansing the system and contains flavonoids, which speed up liver activity, producing detox enzymes. Nettle, peppermint and chamomile are also great options first thing in the morning or just before bed.

Greens

You've probably been told to eat your greens since you were a child. But as it so often turns out - mother knows best! Broccoli works with the enzymes in your liver, helping your body combat toxins. Cabbage is another nutritional powerhouse, helping to lower cholesterol, cleansing your liver and aiding in digestion, meaning toxins are passed out of the body faster.
