The incident reportedly occurred during the 54th over of the Baggy Greens’ second innings on Tuesday; Peter Nevill was then dismissed by SA speedster Kagiso Rabada next ball.

Law 42.3 of the MCC’s Laws of Cricket states that a fielder may polish the ball “provided that no artificial substance is used”.

Proteas team media manager Lerato Malekutu has told at least one South African-based journalist since the incident that it is an ICC matter and “they have not raised any concerns with us”.

The tourists thrashed the embattled Aussies by an innings and 80 runs to ensure their third away series success over those foes in a row.
