Dieting doesn’t mean you have to give up dessert – if you’re smart about it!

accreditation

These days, healthy food is anything but boring. But while most people know all about the good fats in avocado and the joys of courgetti (courgette pasta for the uninitiated), low-fat sweet treats often leave us stumped. If you need help dreaming up guilt-free desserts, we’ve got you covered.

Research alternatives

A lot of the time, we simply don’t know what else is out there. So before digging into your usual chocolate chip ice cream, check out the alternatives. Maybe there are some vegan options that cut calories by switching out the milk and cream? Or maybe a frozen yoghurt could satisfy that craving.

Portion control

It’s great to be creative in the kitchen, but making a big batch of cakes has some serious downsides. If you find yourself gobbling up most of your treats before you can share them with friends, it’s time to get savvy on portions. Most recipes tell you how many calories per 100g, so divide into 150-calorie portions and store in separate tubs. Freeze some and they’ll last ages.

Mix and match recipes

Just because you’re told to use butter in this or chocolate in that doesn’t mean you have to follow it word for word. Be a recipe rebel and check out healthier alternatives. Replace chocolate chips with raisins for example or butter with mashed avocado.

Feel fruity

The natural sugar found in fruit will always beat sugar in cookies and cakes. Luckily, it tastes great! A low-fat yoghurt with strawberries and blueberries makes a great snack or dessert or for a treat, dip grapes and strawberries in a little melted chocolate and enjoy an almost guilt-free fondue.

Sharing is caring

If you’re out for dinner, it’s absolutely fine to go for your favourite dessert as a treat. But how about sharing it with someone else? Immediately you save half the calories and fat and you still satisfy that craving – sweet!
