DVD: Hotel Transylvania

Rated: 3/5  2012 91 min PG Animated comedy To protect his vampire daughter, Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez), from being persecuted by humans, COUNT DRACULA (Adam Sandler) builds a fortress that doubles as a five-star resort for monsters and keeps her there with scary tales of the outside world. But Mavis yearns for company her own age and to explore. During preparations for her 118th birthday party and with the hotel packed with werewolves, gremlins and mummies, human backpacker JONATHAN (Andy Samberg) stumbles in, threatening to upset Dracula’s carefully laid plans.

This zany, action-packed romp is packed with witty jokes, snappy dialogue and visual gags. Director Genndy Tartakovsky, known for quirky TV cartoons Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack, creates lots of goofy, Looney Tunes-style fun surrounding a host of weird yet lovable monsters. Rather than the usual smooth CG look, the animation sometimes resembles clay and collage. And at the centre there’s a surprisingly heartfelt relationship between father and daughter and a relevant message about prejudice.
