Her 24-year-old daughter used to be confident and outgoing, a fun-loving young woman who lived each day to the full. That girl is gone now, her heartbroken mother says. She might be here in body but her spirit is broken.
“A mother can see it,” Amanda Smith says. “She hides in the background now. She had this great big laugh but that’s gone too. That bastard has taken my daughter away from me.”
The person she’s talking about is Thomas – or Thabo – Bester, the so-called Facebook rapist sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of rape and two counts of armed robbery with aggravating circumstances.
“I hope he dies in prison. We listened to his excuses in court,” she says bitterly, recalling his testimony that he was abused and raped during a childhood and adolescence fraught with violence and trauma.
“But if he was raped how could he go out and inflict the same horror on others? How could he do that?”
