DIGITORIAL
Like many South African families, the One Rand Family enjoys a happy life. They live in a beautiful home, have good careers and healthy children. They have a close circle of family and friends, a great lifestyle – and big dreams and plans for the future.
One problem, there always seems to be too much month left at the end of their money. Mom’s a spender and Dad doesn’t keep count. Could they be worse off than they seem to think?
To figure out where their hard-earned money goes every month, they’ve made a radical family decision – to get their entire salaries paid to them in R1 coins this July. They’ve locked away their bank cards, deactivated their banking apps and will live only on those coins for National Savings Month.
Njabulo (18) - Son
Self-proclaimed entrepreneur Njabulo has been given two years (by Mom and Dad) to get his outdoor media business off the ground. If all goes well he’ll sidestep “the plan” – for him to go to university to study civil engineering. Like Dad he enjoys a good gym session to unwind, but shares Mom’s taste for expensive clothes. After all, what’s the point of saving for a rainy day?
Sibusiso (42) - Dad
Occupation: commodities manager
Sibusiso is the head of the household. Apart from managing his demanding career he takes pride in being able to provide for his family. Keeping them safe and happy is important. After a gruelling
day he retreats to his mancave (the Dad-only zone) to listen to music and update his vinyl collection. Money isn’t taken for granted; he has worked hard for it. Why apologise for spending it?
Londiwe (36) - Mom
Occupation: Town planner
Londiwe is the successful and driven working mom. Juggling both the role of career woman and mother is something she’s proud of – although she admits having a little help doesn’t hurt. The spa, nail bar and hair salon are her places of solace. Her pride and joy is her car. Who’ll take you seriously if you arrive in a “skadonk”?
Anaya (3) Daughter
In between all the grownups, little Anaya is a breath of fresh air with loads of energy. Her favourite pastime? Going to the salon with Mommy, of course. Secretly she’s a daddy’s girl, and knows exactly how to wrap him around her little finger.
