The 27-year-old singer and actress separated from her husband of three years, Mike Comrie, in January of this year. Moving on has been a task she has taken in her stride, but not without plenty of difficult media attention.
“I have a good therapist!” she told the Canadian edition of Elle magazine when questioned about how she handled it.
Hilary and Mike, a former professional hockey player, have two-year-old son Luca together. They’ve been pictured out together a lot lately, sparking speculation they may be reconciling, although no such announcement has been made. Hilary is accustomed to this kind of spotlight on her personal life.
"I've dealt with [attention] for such a long time,” she told the publication as she posed for their cover. “But some of the bigger struggles that came my way in the past two years—like my separation or when my parents separated—were the first times I had to deal with people knowing about something personal happening to my family. It just felt so invasive and insensitive. It got really gross, and I think part of you gets a bit desensitized.”
But the Lizzie McGuire star has developed a thick skin over her 20 years in the entertainment industry. She has learned to accept flaws and move on.
“The best way to handle it is by just owning your sh*t,” she declared. “I'm human and this is what happened. None of us is perfect."
Hilary has been combining her career with motherhood. Most recently, she has been hard at work on her latest album, which is set to be her first release in seven years. She is also working on TV Land sitcom Younger, which has been filming in New York City.
