Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, Katie Holmes, country-sanger Taylor Swift and True Blood actor Alexander Skarsgård all appear in the film that hits the silver screen next August. The movie is based on American writer Lois Lowry’s 1993 science-fiction book for young adults. It’s set in the distant future, when people no longer have emotions. Just a single Giver (Bridges) is tasked with remembering the past and must pass on this knowledge to a youngster (Brenton Thwaites).

Some of the young actors in the movie are already in Cape Town for filming. Cameron Monaghan, who plays Ian Gallagher in the TV series Shameless, tweeted a photograph of Table Mountain with the caption: ‘‘Table for the Gods... @Table Mountain’’. He also downloaded a Madiba quote, a picture of a seal and a snap of him and Hollywood legend Jeff Bridges on Instagram.

Dezi Rorich, the movie’s advertising executive, didn‘t want to reveal too much about the film or when the other actors would arrive in South Africa. But she did say the movie would be shot around Cape Town and shooting starts this week. Rumour has it a “small village” with seven wooden houses is being built in the arboretum in Paarl, where shooting starts next month.

Brenton Thwaite: The 24-year-old Australian actor plays Jonas, the youngster mentored by The Giver (Bridges). Katie Holmes plays his mother and Alexander Skarsgård his father.
Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift: Taylor (23) plays Rosemary, the last teenager The Giver mentors before meeting Jonas. Who knows? The fires of romance may even flare up on set. Taylor and Brenton were very close at a party at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. “Taylor was there for work but as soon as she and Brenton started talking she pretty much ignored everyone else in the room, a source says. ”
Odeya Rush: The 16-year-old actress is best known for her role in the 2012 fantasy drama The Odd Life of Timothy Green with Jennifer Garner. The Israeli-born actress plays Fiona, a close friend and love interest of Jonas.
Cameron Monaghan: The 20-year-old actor from the TV series Shameless plays Jonas’ best friend Asher.
