Improved seafood sustainability: report


Transparency in the way retailers and suppliers procure seafood is contributing towards sustainability, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) SA said on Thursday.

These findings were made in WWF-SA's retailer/supplier participation scheme report, released during National Marine Week at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, spokeswoman Andrea Weiss said.

The report showed participants made an average improvement of 30 percent over eight focus areas.

The scheme engaged 10 of the country's major retailers, seafood restaurants, and suppliers to encourage more sustainable practices.

"The report provides an overview of the current state of these companies' commitments to sourcing sustainable seafood," she said.

WWF-SA CEO Morné du Plessis said everyone in the seafood chain needed to ensure healthy oceans for future generations.

The participation scheme dates back to 2008 when WWF-SA started to work with large seafood traders.

Assessments were done with participants twice a year.
