Cape Town - This extreme sport athlete’s feat went viral after pulling off the first ever wheelchair backflip.

Ilaria Naef from Italy was recently filmed gliding over the water as she sat in a wheelchair being dragged by a motorboat.

The 29-year-old was able to do this with the help of Vanni Oddera, a professional motocross rider who adapted her wheelchair and designed the special gear.

"We built this wheelchair because we wanted to make it cheaper for disabled people to water-ski," Vanni explained.

"Ilaria's ride was safe and she had a lot of fun, so we're confident we are at a good stage in the process.

"Once the wheelchair is finalised, we plan to start competitions and races."
