For the first time since that terrible day in May this year when their baby and his day mother were murdered there’s happiness in Wiets (33) and Rita Botes’ home in Delmas.
Following their awful loss a double joy awaits them because Rita (31) is eight weeks pregnant – with twins!
It won’t replace their son, Wiehan, or lessen their suffering, Rita says solemnly. They waited for him for five long years only to lose him at the age of five months. It’s an experience that will stay with them for life.
“Even the news I was pregnant didn’t make the pain go away,” she says now. “But we’re also entitled to happiness.”
The murder of little Wiehan Botes and Magrietha de Goede (66), a popular day mother in the town, appalled people around South Africa. De Goede’s body was found in her garage and the baby under a bed, his teddy bear still clutched in his arms. The murderer remains at large.
In the terrible days immediately after the horrific crime Wiehan’s grieving parents told each other even though the killer had robbed them of the most precious part of their lives they wouldn’t be robbed of future happiness as well.
