His story touched millions worldwide and Zach Sobiech’s message continues to live on through his music, even after his recent death.
The American died on 20 May at the age of 18 after a long battle with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer. But his song about his experience, Clouds, has received more than four million hits on YouTube and topped the iTunes list of top sellers.
Zach released the song in December 2012, six months after he’d heard he had less than a year to live. The lyrics deal with his fight against cancer: “We’ll go up, up, up/ But I’ll fly a little higher/ We’ll go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer/ Up here, my dear. It won’t be long now, If only I had a little bit more time.”
Proceeds from sales of the song will go to the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund which helps research the disease that ended Zach’s life.
In a statement after his death, his family said, “We’d like to thank those people who listened with their hearts and helped Zach bring his message and his music to the world.”
In a documentary made a few months before his death, Zach said, “I want everyone to know you don’t have to find out you’re dying to start living.”
