Lupita Nyong’o felt “naked” when she first shaved off her hair.
The 12 Years a Slave actress admits that when she first lopped off her locks aged 19, it took a while to come to terms with her new appearance. However, it wasn’t entirely out of choice, as years of chemical treatments had left her hair badly damaged. “It wasn’t on a whim – I spent days thinking about it first,” she told Redbook magazine. “Once I did it, it was very liberating but I also felt very naked. When you feel the wind on your scalp, it’s like, Oh my God. But I’ve kept my hair short ever since.”

Lupita (31) is now famous for her cropped ‘do. And the Oscar-nominated star loves how low-maintenance her look is.
“It’s easy,” Lupita said. “As a teen, my hair caused me so much anxiety. When I wasn’t happy with how my hair looked, I’d spend recess in the bathroom because I was so embarrassed.”
Lupita has also earned a name for herself as a style icon over the past year. But the actress says when it comes to everyday dressing, she prefers the low-key approach.
“I’ve always cared about how I look, but to dress to the nines all the time is to have no life,” she said.
Lupita first entered the limelight thanks to her role as the slave Patsey in 12 Years a Slave.
She can soon be seen starring in the highly-anticipated latest instalment in the Star Wars franchise.
