"We at this stage cannot confirm if the cat was indeed shot or stabbed to death," said Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) spokeswoman Jolene Delport.

'We at this stage cannot confirm if the cat was indeed shot or stabbed to death'

"The cat is being sent to an independent laboratory for a post-mortem," she said.

"We suspect at this stage the cat has been dead for over 24 hours due to the condition of the body."

Delport said the Johannesburg SPCA was called to the scene when metro police found the cat in a green plastic bag on Von Wielligh Road, between Pritchard and Jeppe streets, in central Johannesburg.

She appealed to the public to come forward with any information relating to the animal's death.

Earlier the Johannesburg metro police said a large cat, then thought to be a cheetah, had been found stabbed to death.

"Somebody stabbed it. We don't know why," said Inspector Edna Mamonyane.

"We have contacted the SPCA and I am on my way there now."

Mamonyane said her officers were on the scene.

"One of my officers at the scene said it was a cheetah. We are waiting for the SPCA to confirm it," she said.

"It might have been killed elsewhere and dropped there."
