Meet my TV husbands

Am I the only one . . . who has TV husbands? Please say you do too, so I don’t feel like a crazy woman.

The reason I’m telling you about my hypothetical relationships is because I’m about to break out the expensive champagne to celebrate the homecoming of TV Husband No 1, Alexander Skarsgård. He plays the very pretty vampire and former Viking Eric Northman in True Blood which is back on our screens from tonight (15 July). It’s hard on our TV marriage that we see each other only once a year for 12 weeks; I try to think of it as a sort of honeymoon. We do spend time together with Blu-ray rewatchings but it’s not quite as special as that first-time viewing.

I know The Real Husband thinks of it as a time of annoyance but he has promised not to judge. He also doesn’t like to watch True Blood with me as all the Eric scenes need to be rewound, played again and savoured (for the purposes of writing this blog lots of Eric clips had to be youtubed as well). And I don’t mind the many, many other women who probably also regard Mr Skarsgård as their TV husband; he is too beautiful not to share.

It wasn’t love at first sight because in season one he had that awful long blonde wig. But the moment Pam cut his hair, my heart stopped. I am also rooting for him and Sookie to end up together. I like vampire Bill (his reincarnation into Billeth at the end of season five was interesting) but it has to be hard to compete with Eric so I can’t see Sookie (or rather Sookaay!) ending up with anyone else (no, not even the muscled and almost always naked Alcide or the annoyingly dull Sam).

My other TV husbands

My second TV husband has sadly had his buddy cop series, Common Law, cancelled. But Michael Ealy is special and the universe knows I need to see more of him because he has a new series coming soon and it sounds promising.

Almost Human is made by JJ Abrams, the man who gave us TV series Lost, Alias, Person of Interest, Fringe and Revolution as well as the new Star Trek movies, so it has to be good. It’s set in the future and is about cops who are teamed up with android partners, which makes me think of that old ’80s series Holmes and Yoyo, but with pretty people. Michael plays one of the androids. It also stars Karl Urban, who plays Bones in the new Star Trek movies, and the gorgeous Minka Kelly from Friday Night Lights and Parenthood.

It was a lovely surprise when Michael was in The Good Wife for a few episodes as Derrick Bond. He was also in FlashForward and Sleeper Cell. But when I feel I need to connect with him I youtube John Legend’s Tonight (Best You Ever Had), a song I love, which has little scenes of Michael from the movie Think like a Man. Michael’s amazingness aside, Almost Human, which starts in America in early November, sounds good. DStv has bought it but no details yet on channel or date.

My third TV husband is Raylan Givens, the deputy US marshal who can’t stay out of trouble in the series Justified.

He holds the distinction of being my only character husband (and the only one who wears a hat). He’s played by Timothy Olyphant who is one seriously good-looking guy, but it’s Raylan whom I adore -- wise-cracking, righteous, swaggering Raylan in that Stetson that shouldn’t look quite as good as it does. Raylan is the coolest guy on TV, and The Real Husband agrees. I do hope you are watching this series as it is crazy good. We should see season four on DStv sometime this year.

& True Blood season 6 starts on M-Net Series Showcase at 9.30 pm tonight (15 July)
