When the alarm goes off in the mornings, it can be enough of a struggle to do something as simple as putting one foot in front of the other. So planning a workout first thing probably doesn't seem like the most logical idea. However, there are proven benefits to getting up and out there!
First off, it will make you feel more energetic. Getting your blood pumping and releasing those endorphins sets you up for the day and you'll feel much more focused on the tasks ahead. It also means you've got the hard part out of the way - so the evening can be dedicated to having fun and relaxing. So how can you make a morning workout part of your daily routine?
Make it unavoidable
Ensure your whole day is filled with little reminders. Write it in your diary, set a notification on your phone and tell as many people as possible that it's a gym morning. Making it part of your day will convince your brain it's not an option to bail.
Be prepared
There's nothing worse than fumbling around in the morning, looking for your trainers and sports bra. Instead, lay everything out the night before, water bottle and all. That way you can literally roll out of bed, grab your bag and go!
Treat yourself
Off-set your morning gym experience with something you love. If you've hit the treadmill, allow yourself a take-out coffee from your favourite cafe. Or if you manage to make it three times in a week, promise yourself a copy of that book you've wanted to read for ages. Just don't indulge in anything too calorific - that will undo all your hard work!
Go easy
And by that we don't mean on your workout! But in every other way, make your life as easy as possible. Pick a class at a gym that's just around the corner or go for a run at a park five minutes down the road. If you're nowhere near either option, stick to a workout DVD in your living room. Also try and get an early night before a gym morning - you just won't function well on less than seven hours' sleep.
Don't be a let down
Use some gentle and well-meant emotional blackmail on yourself. Try and find a gym/running buddy that's a total morning person and arrange to meet them for a session. Feeling like you'll let someone down if you don't turn up can be very motivational. Also, book your morning classes well in advance. Many gyms frown upon no-shows or even charge a penalty - how's that for tough love!
