Marietjie Vosloo (33), who allegedly beat her stepdaughter, Mundolene (17), to death in Mauritius in October, is struggling to adapt to all the rules in jail.
Her husband Mike, Mundolene’s father, who is still working in the Congo, says Marietjie is allowed to make two 10-minute phone calls a week from jail.

She mainly calls him and their 11-year-old son. Marietjie’s son and Mundolene’s half-brother stay with an au pair in Margate, KwaZulu-Natal, while Mike is working in the mining industry in the Congo.

“She’s doing sort of okay; there are many rules and things she has to get used to,” Mike told YOU in a WhatsApp message on Friday.

A post mortem examination showed Mundolene had died of a brain haemorrhage. Her stepmother allegedly attacked her at the luxury Hotel Riu Creole after an argument about towels.
According to a Mauritian police spokesman, Inspector Shiva Coothen, there’s no prospect of Marietjie being given bail and in all probability she will spend Christmas in jail.

“She has no one here, she has no money and she has nowhere to go,” he said, summing up Marietjie’s situation.

Someone should have at least proof of a permanent address on the island before bail can be considered.
She’s appeared in court again on 17 November but the case was postponed until 30 November.

Inspector Coothen says the court will hold a preliminary investigation before deciding whether to charge Marietjie with murder or culpable homicide.
“The case will take a long time. Her safety is being guarded in the central prison in Bambous.”
Meanwhile, Mike and Marietjie's young son will spend Christmas with his nanny in Margate.
"I was at home for the past few Decembers but since the incident, my whole life has changed irrevocably," he told YOU.
