‘My one & only’

To sport fans Odwa Ndungane is the dreadlocked rugby star of the Sharks and Springboks. But there’s another side to him that fans might not see: he’s a real romantic – and he proved it recently to lovely Kgomotso Mogatwe.

Odwa (29) proposed to the 28-year-old beauty at one of SA’s most exclusive hotels, the six-star One & Only at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront.

He lured her to the Mother City with the promise of a romantic getaway, then proposed after breakfast in the suite he’d booked.

‘‘I had to wait for her to finish breakfast,’’ Odwa says. ‘‘What I’d planned to do was playing through my mind the entire time. I was so nervous!’’

Kgomotso adds, ‘‘I thought he was acting a bit strangely but I realised what was happening only when he started fiddling in his pocket.’’

Odwa says he’d planned to go down on one knee to ask for her hand ‘‘but she was laughing too much so I just sat there waiting for her to answer.’’

‘‘I laugh a lot when I’m nervous and he caught me by surprise,’’ Kgomotso says. ‘‘I knew it would happen but I didn’t know when. Then I saw the bling and I was blinded!’’

She’s planning to move from Johannesburg to Durban to live with Odwa.

After getting to know each other Odwa was keen for Kgomotso to meet his family.

‘‘But I’m Tswana and Odwa is Xhosa,’’ she says. ‘‘I was terrified because he told me his dad is old-fashioned so I thought it was only appropriate to speak in the elders’ language. I bought an isiXhosa DVD but it was a useless attempt!’’

The meeting went off without a hitch though, Odwa says. ‘‘My family loves her and I told my dad about my plans before I proposed. He was very supportive – and my mom wants more grandchildren.’’
